# Church spiritual gifts tools compared: GiftWell beside SpiritualGiftsTest.com, ServeWire, Spiritual Gifts Plus, Pastor Center and Ministry Way

> GiftWell is the newest tool on this page and the one built around what happens after the test: a ten-minute phone assessment on your own website, results shown as bands with the margin drawn, and every result in your team's follow-up list the same day, with the person's own words, their consent, the serving teams that need them, and a check 90 days later on whether the placement took. Planning Center sync, an AI assistant that works your list on your behalf, and a published list of things it will never do are on every plan, including the free one for your first 50 people. The other paid tools, from $99 a year to $100 a month, mostly describe a test, a ranked or scored result, a dashboard and an export. Where one of them fits a church better, this page says so.

## What the follow-up looks like, tool by tool

The test is the easy part. Every tool on this page can get a person to a results screen. The question a connections pastor should ask is what the tool does on Monday, when forty results have arrived and three leaders need to know who to call.

| | After a result arrives |
|---|---|
| GiftWell | the result is in the follow-up list with the person's words and consent, next to the serving teams that need those gifts; statuses move as the conversation happens; a placement gets a 90-day check; leaders see only their ministries; a weekly digest says who is waiting on whom; a pastor can ask an AI assistant "who should I call this week?" and get the answer from the real list |
| SpiritualGiftsTest.com | search and filter by gift, personality or name; CSV export; completion tracking; an email when someone finishes; manual entry of printed results |
| ServeWire VES | results emailed as a PDF; pushed to custom tabs on Planning Center profiles; "% Fit" for positions |
| Spiritual Gifts Plus | dashboard and team recommendations; analytics and AI team matching on Advanced; PDF export on Premium |
| Pastor Center | dashboard; AI matching on Advanced |
| Ministry Way | a kanban pipeline, email and SMS follow-up, QR codes and team access on Pro |
| AssessME | results in Planning Center People, where the church builds its own workflow |

A searchable record, a PDF in an inbox or a tab on a profile is a filing system. None of those pages describes a place where the question "has anyone talked to this person yet?" has an answer. GiftWell's follow-up list exists to answer it.

## Price, and what it is priced on

The flat-rate tools are cheaper for a large church. SpiritualGiftsTest.com at $99 a year and ServeWire at $147 a year give unlimited tests, and a church of 800 that assesses everyone pays nothing more. On GiftWell that church is on a custom plan.

GiftWell is priced on people assessed because that is what the church is buying: a result and a conversation per person. Every leader, pastor and admin is free, so a church with twelve ministry leaders in the follow-up list pays no more than a church with one. The first 50 people are free with no card, which covers a church plant or a single small group for as long as it stays that size. Retakes never count.

Spiritual Gifts Plus and Pastor Center sit at the other end, from $300 to $600 a year or $50 to $100 a month, and Ministry Way's Pro plan is $100 a month, which is $1,200 a year. Each of those bundles more: DISC, customised gift lists, AI matching, email and SMS follow-up. If a church wants those, the price buys them. What a church should notice is where Planning Center sits in each price list: GiftWell includes it on the free plan; Spiritual Gifts Plus and Pastor Center charge their top tier for it.

## What members take

The GiftWell assessment is about 60 behaviour statements across nine gifts, about ten minutes on a phone, with no account, no app and no email required. Progress saves on the device, so a person can stop when the service starts and finish at lunch. It works inside your website, with JavaScript off, and on a bad connection. It is the same test for every church on the Free and Small plans; the Growing plan adds the builder, so a church can add statements of its own and import SHAPE or homegrown results.

ServeWire and Pastor Center are built around editing: ServeWire lets a church rename gifts, add questions and brand the test, and offers the full SHAPE; Pastor Center lets a church turn gifts off and rewrite definitions. Ministry Way and Know My Gifts start from a form the church builds. Spiritual Gifts Plus and Pastor Center add a DISC personality section to the same sitting, which makes the test 112 questions.

If a church wants a fully editable 20-plus gift list with a personality profile in the same test, ServeWire or Pastor Center fit that wish better than GiftWell does. GiftWell keeps nine gifts and five statements each on purpose, because that is what a ten-minute phone test can measure honestly, and because the statements were written against the research rather than a tradition's wish list (see below).

## How results are shown

This is the clearest difference. Every other tool on this page, as far as its own pages describe it, shows the member an order: a "top five", a ranked chart, a dominant list, a fit score. GiftWell shows bands with the margin drawn: every gift within three points of the highest is in the lead band, the next gift within two points is "at the edge", and gifts inside a band sit in Romans 12 order so no ranking can be recovered.

The reason is arithmetic. Five statements scored to 25 give a result that is honest to about two points either way, so a list that puts teaching third and mercy fourth is reporting noise as information. A pastor who opens a GiftWell result sees "lead band: teaching, encouraging, mercy" and talks about those three. We did not find a drawn margin of error on any other vendor's public pages in October 2026.

ServeWire's "% Fit" and Ministry Way's Excellent, Strong and Good ratings go a step further and score the person against a position. GiftWell shows which serving teams need a person's lead gifts and leaves the fit to the conversation. A result in GiftWell also carries what no score can: the person's own words about what stirs them and what their life allows right now, and, if they shared it, what two people who know them said when asked whether the bands ring true.

## Built on the research

GiftWell publishes the research behind each design choice on [why we ask what we ask](/why-we-ask-what-we-ask). We did not find the same on any other vendor's pages we read in October 2026. The short version:

- A 2013 review of spiritual gifts inventories (Horvath, *Journal of Psychology and Christianity*) found they lack the reliability and validity evidence they appear to carry and are best used as conversation starters. GiftWell is built on that view: the test opens the conversation and the follow-up list is where the church has it.
- A 1989 study (Ledbetter and Foster) found a 14-gift inventory's subscales collapsed into three broad factors; it could not tell apart the gifts it claimed to measure. GiftWell measures nine, with five statements each, and admits its margin on every bar.
- Self-report research (Schwarz 1999; Paulhus 1991) shows "I am generous" inflates and "last year I gave beyond my regular giving" does not. GiftWell's statements ask what has happened in the past year, and some ask what other people have told you.

The other vendors' pages describe their tests by length, gift count and features. None we read in October 2026 cites the research that bears on whether a gifts inventory can do what it claims.

## Planning Center and your church software

GiftWell connects to Planning Center with one sign-in, asks only for People and Services, and is on every plan. It matches people by email, then by name, and never guesses: a result with no confident match waits for a human to choose. It writes band names, Ephesians 4 leanings and the date to fields you choose, pulls your teams from Services and People into GiftWell's serving teams, and a month after a placement checks whether the person was actually scheduled and tells you. Scores, briefs, private notes and anyone who did not consent never leave GiftWell, and GiftWell never deletes anything in Planning Center.

ServeWire pushes results to custom tabs on Planning Center profiles and also works with Church Community Builder's MyFit. AssessME lists Planning Center and Church Community Builder. Spiritual Gifts Plus and Pastor Center include Planning Center on their Premium tier only. Ministry Way lists Planning Center as a beta and Breeze as coming soon. Rock RMS is a church management system with the test inside it.

If Planning Center sync is the deciding feature, GiftWell, ServeWire and AssessME all have it on every plan; the other two charge their highest tier for it. ServeWire's and AssessME's pages describe results going into Planning Center. GiftWell's sync also brings your teams and your scheduling back out, which is what makes the 90-day check possible.

## AI

AI is where these tools are moving fastest, and where a church should read the fine print. Ministry Way scores each person against every ministry with AI. Know My Gifts writes the interpretation with AI. Spiritual Gifts Plus and Pastor Center offer AI matching on their Advanced tiers.

GiftWell uses AI more than any of them and lets it judge less. The rule is written into the product: AI never scores anyone and never writes anything a member sees. What it does instead:

- **Works your list for you.** Connect Claude or any assistant that speaks the Model Context Protocol and ask it who is waiting, log a conversation, place someone, find ministries for a gift, or walk a new church through setup. Each connection is named, scoped to a role no higher than your own, and expires. It never contacts a member and never writes to Planning Center.
- **Reads your website.** Give GiftWell your address once and it offers your accent colour, logo, city, ministries and serving teams, each to accept or not.
- **Fills a shelf from a photo.** Point a phone at your church's bookshelf and it offers every title, with covers found, to your resources list.
- **Briefs a pastor, on your key, staff only.** An optional summary of a person's own words before a conversation, written by the AI provider your church chose and paid for, from what the person wrote and never from their scores. Without a key, nothing is missing from a result.

If a church wants AI to rank its people against its ministries, GiftWell is the wrong tool, on purpose. The other vendors' pages do not describe an assistant that can act in the product, a website reader or a bookshelf reader, as of October 2026.

## What GiftWell promises the people who take it

GiftWell publishes a list of things it never does, with the switch each promise is kept by: never ranks gifts, never shares what a person did not share, never lets the private answer leave the person's page, never exposes someone who may be under 18, never lets a chart point at one person, never keeps results longer than the church said, never contacts a member, never sees your card. A member can erase their own result at any time, and it is gone from backups within 30 days. The owner can take everything out as a sealed file with a passphrase.

We did not find a comparable published list on any other vendor's pages in October 2026. That is worth weighing. A spiritual gifts result includes things people would not say in a lobby.

## Your website, your address

Every tool here can be linked from a church website. SpiritualGiftsTest.com, ServeWire and Ministry Way describe an embed as well.

GiftWell gives three ways: a hosted page in your colours, a one-line script that puts the assessment inside any page on your site, and your own subdomain, such as gifts.yourchurch.org, on the Small plan and above. We never stick you on a GiftWell subdomain. The embed sets no tracking cookies and sends nothing until the person taps start. A branded QR code for the bulletin or the slide comes with the link.

## Switching to GiftWell

Nobody needs to lose a year of results to switch, and the two tools can run side by side while you decide.

1. Create your church. The first 50 people are free, no card. Your link, your embed and your QR code work the minute you sign up.
2. Give GiftWell your website. It offers your colours, logo and ministries; accept what is right.
3. Connect Planning Center. GiftWell writes to fields you choose, so fields another tool filled stay as they are.
4. Put the link in this Sunday's bulletin. New results arrive in the follow-up list; your team starts there.
5. Bring old results across when it is worth it. The Growing plan imports SHAPE and homegrown results, and a CSV from the old tool gives you the names to invite.

## Where another tool is the better choice

- A large church that will assess everyone and wants the lowest flat price: SpiritualGiftsTest.com ($99/yr) or ServeWire ($147/yr).
- A church that teaches SHAPE and wants the full SHAPE with an editable gift list: ServeWire.
- A church that wants DISC in the same sitting and a 24- or 26-gift list: Pastor Center or Spiritual Gifts Plus.
- A church that wants AI to rate people against ministries and run email and SMS follow-up from a pipeline: Ministry Way.
- A church on Rock RMS content with the built-in assessment.

## Where GiftWell is the better choice

- You want people to finish, on a phone, from a QR code, with no account.
- You want results shown honestly, as bands with the margin drawn, so the conversation is about two or three gifts and not a number three.
- You want the result in your team's hands the same day, with the person's words and consent, tied to your own serving teams, and a 90-day check on whether the placement took.
- You want a test written against the published research, by people who show their work.
- You want Planning Center on your first plan, going both ways: band names out, teams and scheduling in.
- You want AI doing the clerical work for your team and never judging your people.
- You want a published list of promises to the people who take it, kept by switches you control.
- You want it on your own website or subdomain, in your colours, and to start free with 50 people and pay for people, never for leaders.

## Questions people ask

### What is the best spiritual gifts assessment tool for a church?

The one that gets people placed. For the lowest flat price with unlimited tests, SpiritualGiftsTest.com ($99/yr) and ServeWire ($147/yr) lead, as of October 2026. For an editable test with SHAPE, ServeWire. For AI matching and SMS follow-up, Ministry Way. For an honest result (bands with the margin drawn), a same-day follow-up list tied to serving teams with a 90-day check, Planning Center on every plan, an AI assistant that works the list for you, and a published privacy list, GiftWell, free for the first 50 people.

### How much does GiftWell cost compared with other church gifts tools?

GiftWell is free for a church's first 50 people, then $100 a year for 150 and $500 a year for 500, with every leader free and retakes never counted. SpiritualGiftsTest.com is $99 a year and ServeWire $147 a year, both unlimited. Spiritual Gifts Plus runs $299.99 to $599.99 a year, Pastor Center $49.99 to $99.99 a month, and Ministry Way Pro $100 a month. All as of October 2026.

### Does GiftWell work with Planning Center?

Yes, on every plan including the free one, and in both directions. People are matched by email, then by name, with no guessing. Band names, Ephesians 4 leanings and the date go to fields you choose; teams come in from Services and People; a month after a placement GiftWell checks whether the person was actually scheduled. Scores, briefs and private notes stay in GiftWell. ServeWire and AssessME also sync; Spiritual Gifts Plus and Pastor Center include Planning Center on their Premium tier.

### Does GiftWell use AI to match people to ministries?

No. AI never scores anyone in GiftWell and never writes anything a member sees. AI does the clerical work instead: an assistant you connect can list who is waiting, log a conversation and place someone, scoped to your role; GiftWell reads your website for your brand and ministries; a photo of a bookshelf becomes a resources list; and a church may add its own key for an optional, staff-only brief. Ministry Way, Know My Gifts, and the Advanced tiers of Spiritual Gifts Plus and Pastor Center use AI for matching or interpretation, as their pages describe.

### Can we move from another tool to GiftWell without losing results?

Yes. The Growing plan imports SHAPE and homegrown results, so earlier results land in the same follow-up list as new ones. Any tool that exports a CSV, which SpiritualGiftsTest.com lists, gives you the names to invite. GiftWell writes to Planning Center fields you choose, so nothing another tool wrote is touched. Most churches run GiftWell for new people first, free, and bring old results across when the import is worth it.

### Why does GiftWell charge per person instead of a flat rate?

Because a church buys a result and a conversation per person, and a church of 60 should not pay for the capacity of a church of 800. Leaders, pastors and admins are free on every plan, so growing the team costs nothing. A church that assesses everyone in a large congregation will find the flat-rate tools cheaper, and this page says so.
