Spiritual gift · Romans 12:6
The spiritual gift of prophecy
Seeing what is really going on and saying it.
What it looks like
You tend to notice the thing in the room nobody has said yet — and you find it hard to leave it unsaid.
How GiftWell spots it
The assessment asks five statements for Prophecy. Each is answered from 1 (not like me at all) to 5 (very much like me), so the gift is scored out of 25. Most ask about things that have actually happened, because a gift shows up in what you do more reliably than in how you describe yourself.
- When something is wrong in a situation or group, I see it quickly and feel compelled to name it.
- I care more that something is true and right than that everyone stays comfortable.
- In the past year, I have spoken a hard truth to someone because I believed God wanted them to hear it.
- When I have named an issue others were avoiding, it came into the open and got dealt with.
- People have told me I helped them see a situation clearly when they were avoiding or rationalizing it.
Results come back as bands: every gift within three points of your strongest shares your lead band, and the ±2 margin is drawn on the chart. If Prophecy shares your lead band with another gift, your result describes the pair, like the combinations below.
What to watch for
Saying the true thing at the wrong moment, or mistaking your own certainty for God's voice. Invite people who can tell you when you are off.
A question to sit with
When have you sensed something was off, or seen what God was doing, before anyone else said it? What did you do with it?
Prophecy alongside other gifts
Most people lead with two to four gifts, and the combination changes how each one shows up.
Prophecy with Serving
You see what is wrong and you fix what you can reach. You are not only a diagnosis, which is what makes people willing to hear the diagnosis.
Watch: Serving can become how you avoid saying it. You quietly repair the symptom, everyone is relieved, and the cause stays exactly where it was.
Prophecy with Teaching
You see it, you check it, and you can show your working. Your correction holds up under pressure because you went and looked first.
Watch: Being right is not the same as being useful. You can win the argument and lose the person, and this pairing makes that unusually easy to do.
Prophecy with Encouraging
You see what is really going on and you say it in a way people can survive hearing. This is a rare pairing — the truth lands without flattening the person it lands on.
Watch: The two instincts move at different speeds. Prophecy wants it named now; encouragement wants it wrapped first. Wrapped far enough and the point never arrives.
Prophecy with Giving
You fund what is actually needed rather than what is being asked for, because you can see the difference between the two.
Watch: Withholding is real power, and prophecy will hand you a reason for it that feels like discernment. Be careful what you starve.
Prophecy with Leading
You see what is wrong and you have the standing to change it. This combination moves things that nothing else in the list moves.
Watch: It is also the combination most able to damage people. Certainty plus authority means nobody corrects you. Put people around you who can, and believe them when they do.
Prophecy with Mercy
You tell the truth and you stay for the aftermath. Most people manage one or the other. You are often the reason a hard word can be received at all.
Watch: The two will fight inside you. Mercy delays what prophecy wants said; prophecy says what mercy then has to nurse. Expect to feel divided rather than balanced.
