GiftWell vs the Team Ministry Spiritual Gifts Survey

The Team Ministry survey from ChurchGrowth.org is a free 108-question test over nine gifts that shows a bar graph of scores and names the dominant gifts, with a Group Edition for churches. GiftWell covers the same nine gifts in about 60 statements, shows bands with the margin drawn, and reaches the church's follow-up list. Which fits your church.

Checked 20 October 2026. Prices and features are from Team Ministry Spiritual Gifts Survey's own pages on that date. Where a page does not mention something, this says so rather than guessing.

The test itself

Both tests measure nine gifts. Team Ministry asks 108 questions, twelve per gift; GiftWell asks about 60 statements, five per gift, scored out of 25. Twelve items per gift give a smoother score, and 108 questions take a good while; GiftWell's wager is that five well-written behaviour statements separate a lead band from the rest and that people finish a ten-minute test on a phone. The research on short inventories is on why we ask what we ask.

How results are shown

Team Ministry shows a bar graph and names the dominant gifts. GiftWell shows bands: every gift within three points of the highest is in the lead band, the next within two points is "at the edge", and inside a band gifts sit in Romans 12 order so no ranking can be recovered. A bar graph invites reading the tallest bar as the answer; a band says "these two or three, together".

What happens after

Team Ministry's free survey is for the individual; the Group Edition gives a church a database of results. GiftWell's result reaches the church's follow-up list the moment it is finished, with the person's own words and consent, next to the serving teams that need those gifts; a leader logs the conversation, places the person and checks 90 days later. Band names sync to Planning Center on every plan.

Who should choose Team Ministry

  • A church that wants a long, well-known free survey.
  • A church that wants a group database and is content with a bar graph per person.
  • A church whose teaching already uses Team Ministry's gift definitions.

Who should choose GiftWell

  • A church that wants results as bands with the margin drawn.
  • A church that wants the result in a leader's hands the same day, with consent and serving teams.

Questions people ask

Do Team Ministry and GiftWell measure the same nine gifts?

Both score nine gifts. GiftWell's nine are the seven in Romans 12 plus administration and hospitality. Team Ministry's page names nine as well; a church should check its own list against the one it teaches.

Which is longer?

Team Ministry is 108 questions. GiftWell is about 60 statements and takes about ten minutes.

Is the Team Ministry survey free for a church?

The individual survey is free. The Group Edition for churches is listed, with a price not shown on the page we read as of October 2026. GiftWell is free for a church's first 50 people and $100 a year for 150.

Why does GiftWell not name a dominant gift?

Because a score out of 25 from five statements is honest to about two points either way, and the gap between a first and second gift is usually inside that. GiftWell shows every gift within three points of the highest as a lead band and talks about those together.
