Share a group's card

Give a small group or ministry a link, or a box on your website, that shows the group's goal and the steps people chose to share. First names only, and only people who said yes.

A group card is a small page about one group from The Web: the group's shared goal as a row of dots, and the steps people in it chose to share in the last 30 days. For example, "Maya · Prayed out loud for the first time" or "Jon · Finished Celebration of Discipline". You can paste its link into a group chat, or put the card on your church's website.

Nobody signs in to see a card, so it shows less than the Web does, and only about people who said yes to being on it.

Who shows on a card

Someone shows on a card only when all of these are true:

  • They turned the Web on in My GiftWell and show in their groups.
  • They also ticked Also show me on cards my church shares outside GiftWell. Everyone starts with this off, including people who already show in the Web.
  • They are in the group, and they are an adult.

If fewer than 3 people in the group meet all of that, the card shows only the group's name and "Not enough people are sharing yet". It shows no dots and no names, and gives no hint of who is in the group.

What a card shows, and what it never does

Shows Never shows
Your church's name and the group's name Last names or initials, photos, ages
The group's goal as dots, filled when someone walks with someone Any number, total, percentage or ranking
Milestones, finished books and pathway steps shared with My groups or The church in the last 30 days Anything shared with Just me or The people I walk with
First names The short line someone wrote with a milestone
"Took a step on the church's pathway" Which stage someone is at

Nothing from a walk ever reaches a card: no words, questions, moments or rhythm. Gifts, results and pastoral notes don't either.

Dots are ordered filled first, so a dot can't be matched to a name.

  1. Open The Web in the admin and choose a group in the Group filter.
  2. Select Share next to "Who walks with whom".
  3. Choose how long the link works: 30 days, 90 days (the default) or a year.
  4. Select Make a link, then Copy, and paste it where your group talks.

The dialog says how many people in the group are on the card, or that fewer than 3 are. Chat apps that show a preview name only your church and the group, never a person.

Under Links out now you can copy any live link again, see when it was made, when it stops working and the last day it was opened. GiftWell never records who opened it. Select Renew to start a new 30, 90 or 365 days from today. Select Revoke to turn a link off for everyone at once.

A link that has expired or been revoked shows "This link no longer works", the same as a link that never existed.

Put a card on your website

  1. In the Share dialog, open the Embed tab.
  2. Under Websites it goes on, add any site other than your church's website, such as ministry.yourchurch.org. The website in Settings is always allowed.
  3. Make the link, then select Copy embed code and paste it into your site where HTML is allowed.

The card only shows inside a frame on the sites you listed. Anywhere else, the browser refuses to show it. The code is a plain <iframe>, and nothing runs on your page.

Say yes, or no (members)

In My GiftWell, under The Web:

  1. Choose to show in the Web, if you haven't already.
  2. Tick Also show me on cards my church shares outside GiftWell, then Save.

Below that you'll see which of your groups has a card shared, and whether you're on it. Untick the box and save to come off every card straight away.

Each milestone keeps its own Who sees it choice. Only steps you share with My groups or The church can appear on a card.

Finished a book or resource? After you mark it I finished this, a choice appears beside it. It starts at Not in the Web. Choose In the Web: my groups to celebrate it with your group. Telling your pastors is still a separate button. If your church stops suggesting a resource, you can still take it back to Not in the Web, but you can't share it more widely.

Things to know

  • Anyone with a link can see the card, and links can be forwarded. That's why cards use first names only, links expire, and members choose for themselves.
  • Changes show straight away. When someone unticks the box, narrows a milestone or is erased, every card at your church updates on its next load.
  • Search engines are told not to index cards, and opening one sets no cookie.
  • The demo church can show you the Share dialog, but it can't make links.
  • Turning the Web off for your church turns off every card.
